HII – Mission Driven Innovative Solutions Inc. (HII-MDIS) provides mission-critical engineering and technical service to Information Technology, Federal Civilian, and National Security, Aerospace & Defense and International government and commercial customers at over 100 locations worldwide.

HII – MDIS is currently seeking a Communications Specialist to support our client in Washington, DC .

The Communication Specialist will lead, write, and edit communications for an Information Technology (IT) project. This role is responsible for a wide variety of tasks and activities, ranging from developing and executing communication strategies and plans, to creating and publishing messages on complex IT information. As part of this effort, the Communication Specialist will work closely with subject matter experts (SMEs) and senior leadership to develop effective communications which translate technical concepts and jargon into accessible, easy-to-understand prose.

The project that the Communication Specialist will be working on is a multi-year, multi-phased project, with a complex, highly technical approach. It involves migrating email from Lotus Notes to Outlook/Exchange. This project is expected to be released to over 28,000 users who are spread across the United States.

The Communication Specialist role is best suited for someone who has a strong background in writing/editing, prior experience in leadership positions, and experience working in IT or a similar field.

Duties and Responsibilities (to include but not be limited to the following):

  • Execute communication strategies and plans that effectively and efficiently communicate the project’s approach, rollout, and execution of email migration.

  • Develop and manage communications between project stakeholders, including senior leadership, architects, administrators, engineers, help desk personnel, IT security personnel, IT testing, training, and other subject matter experts (SMEs).

  • Develop and manage consistent project style/branding across all forms of communications, in collaboration with the communications department.

  • Write communications drafts by working with the project manager, project team, and other project stakeholders, such as senior leadership, architects, administrators, engineers, help desk personnel, IT security personnel, IT testing, training, and other subject matter experts (SMEs).

  • Coordinate and work with project manager and the client to seek approval on messaging.

  • Deliver communications in accordance with agreed upon communications plan.

  • Help drive awareness across appropriate departments, offices, and branches of all new initiatives that the project team is working on.

  • Developing internal newsletters and content for project website.

  • Use strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills for print, web, and digital communications.

Qualifications and Experience :

Required –

  • Bachelor’s Degree: Preferably in English, communications, or related field

  • Minimum of 6 years of related experience in writing/editing, communications, or a related field.

  • Experience with developing communications design/branding

  • Experience with graphical design

  • Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Excellent communications, research, and organization skills.

  • Advanced skills with Word, PowerPoint, and Excel are required.

Preferred –

  • Experience with leadership roles is a plus.

  • Experience in IT is a big plus.

  • Experience with organizational change methodologies is a big plus.
